One System for All

This group project looks at structural problems within the PRT (Pittsburgh Regional Transit) T-rail system by treating visual communication as part of public infrastructure, rather than just branding or surface-level graphics. While observing the existing signage, maps, and wayfinding systems, the team noticed how often these systems break down for users navigating the transit environment. These gaps revealed how design decisions can either support or hinder navigation, often leading to confusion or negative user experiences.

In response, we explored improvements across signage, information hierarchy, and digital interfaces, with a focus on accessibility to make essential information easier to read and use for a wider range of people. Through this process, I began to see visual communication not just as a tool for clarity or aesthetics, but as a responsibility—especially in public systems that people rely on every day. Looking back, the project would have benefited from deeper research involving real users, which could have helped us better understand the lived challenges people face when using the system.
